Landscape Photographs

Landscapes take many forms, a mountain, a lake, a leaf on tree........or even an interesting building.   Maybe I'm lucky, I've always loved photographing things since I was a kid, and even if my photos aren't the best in the world one thing that photography has taught me is how to observe my surroundings.  Photographers do tend to see things differently to other people.

Going back a few years, I did an extensive City & Guilds photography course. In those days I was well into my photography, always buying the latest gear - new lenses, bodies and then moving on to medium format cameras etc etc. Always more expense.

The tutor for the course was a guy called Dougie. He was the most gifted landscape photographer I'd ever met at the time, the shots he took were just outstanding.  The most valuable thing Dougie taught us was: it's not the gear - it's the guy behind the camera that makes the photos. He should know because he was living proof of his own statement, no carting around bags stuffed full of clutter for him, he used a little 35mm compact that he shoved in his rucksack.

Since then I spent a few years working as a pro photographer but now all that's behind me and I've been able to adopt Dougie's approach to landscape photography. Gone are the Nikon & Canon SLRs and Mamiya medium format cameras of the profession. All the photos taken on this website (apart from the Australia shots which were taken by my lad Ben on his Nikon SLR) are taken using compact digital cameras and I welcome their simplicity and lack of weight and clutter, all I ever insist on now is spot metering.  I know the shots won't win any prizes for their clarity and definition but as I only shoot for my own pleasure these days it doesn't matter - back to basics is good for the soul sometimes.

Most of the photos here you'll find elsewhere on the website, and some you won't. I just thought it would be an idea to put some of the nicer places under one "roof"
